The FTC indicated it wasn't just the fact about the SSN being advertised to millions, but Mr. Davis was also blatantly inviting people to try and steal it. The company agreed to discontinue running that particular ad campaign. The end results is that the FTC did issue a fine and came down on the company pretty hard for those commercials, but it was his real social and there was no LifeLock scam. These on-going rumors of a LifeLock scam all started because of this ad campaign. The numbers reported concerning that social security number advertised to millions was that 13 recorded attempts were made where people actually tried to use it. One of the 13 attempts did get as far as actually having the account opened with the social security number. The mistake was discovered fairly quickly and then that account was instantly closed down.
Some people say this should be viewed as an embarrassment to Mr Davis, but he says it is the exact opposite because after all of the advertisements the service stopped 12 attempts and immediately notified him of the 1 that did get opened. He says it is proof that there never was a LifeLock scam. In addition to this, no other person is going to advertise their social on TV, therefore they had much lower risk than he put himself at.
